Sissinghurst Castle Garden The Historic Houses, Art & Heritage of Sussex and Kent

6 days from £859 Departing 9th September 2023

Day 1

We depart from Diss, and en-route to our hotel we visit the National Trust’s Sissinghurst Castle Garden. Developed around the surviving parts of an Elizabethan mansion, the gardens provide outstanding design and colour throughout the seasons. We continue to the 4* Hydro Hotel in Eastbourne for a five night stay on a half board basis.

Day 2

We visit the National Trust’s Bateman’s property with our Blue Badge guide this morning. This magnificent 17th century manor house was the home of Rudyard Kipling from 1902 to 1936, and most of the rooms including his book lined study are much as Kipling left them. The afternoon is at leisure in Eastbourne, and on an individual basis you may choose to visit the Towner Art Gallery, an award winning contemporary art museum. The Towner Art Gallery holds one of the most significant public art collections in the South East. It boasts over 4,000 works of art by historic, modern and contemporary artists including works by Eric Ravilious, Grayson Perry, Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore.

Day 3

With our Blue Badge guide we visit the National Trust’s Scotney Castle this morning. The house was designed by Anthony Salvin in Elizabethan style and built in 1837 for Edward Hussey III, while the romantic ruins of a medieval castle and moat are the focal point of the celebrated gardens featuring spectacular displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, and kalmia. We continue to the National Trust’s Emmetts Garden this afternoon. This charming and informal garden has many exotic and rare trees and shrubs from around the world and panoramic views across the Weald of Kent.

Day 4

This morning we enjoy a guided tour of Charleston House, the home of the artists Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell that became the meeting place for the group of writers, artists and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group. We continue with our Blue Badge guide to the National Trust’s Monks House. This small 17th century weatherboarded cottage in the village of Rodmell was the country retreat of novelist Virginia Woolf and her husband Leonard, and a meeting place for the Bloomsbury Group. The garden features the room where she wrote her best known works and includes cottage garden borders, orchard, allotments and ponds.

Day 5

Our Blue Badge guide meets us at our hotel this morning and accompanies us throughout the day. We firstly visit Great Dixter House and Gardens, once the family home of the late Christopher Lloyd who devoted his lifetime to creating one of the most experimental, exciting and constantly changing gardens of our time. This afternoon we visit Hastings Contemporary Gallery. Championing modern and contemporary art, the Gallery has an ambitious programme of temporary exhibitions and includes work by important Modern British artists, internationally celebrated artists, and emerging practitioners. The gallery sits among Hastings’s famous net huts, overlooking the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe. During our visit there is an exhibition showing Soutine and Kossoff, two major figures of 20th century painting. Soutine was an expressionist who lived and worked in Paris; Kossoff a British expressionist portrait painter.

Day 6

After checking out of our hotel and en route home we visit the National Trust’s Ightham Mote, a superb moated manor house and garden, nestling in a sunken valley and dating from 1330. The main features of the house span many centuries and include the Great Hall and Tudor chapel with a painted ceiling. Afterwards, we return home to Diss, stopping en-route for comfort breaks.

NB:- Please note we reserve the right to alter the above itinerary if required for operational reasons. Given the historic nature of the places visited, a certain degree of walking will be involved, and this holiday may not be suitable for those with mobility problems.
